Turmeric has been used in Ayurveda medicine for thousands of years and now the science is showing why. Well-known for its anti-inflammatory properties, Turmeric has been found to be equal, or even superior, to pharmaceutical anti-inflammatory medication. It is antibacterial and contains antioxidants, manganese, iron, copper and potassium.

History of Turmeric

Turmeric comes from the plant Curcuma longa which is a member of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae and is native to southwest India.

Turmeric has been used in Asia for thousands of years – first as a dye then later for its medicinal properties and is a major part of both Siddha and Ayurvedic medicine.

Turmeric is a natural source of curcumin which has anti-inflammatory properties and contains antioxidants (to help neutralise free radicals in the body). It is antibacterial (to assist with liver problems and digestive issues) and contains manganese (required for digestion), iron (required for normal cellular function, copper (to help the body use iron) and potassium (an essential nutrient for fluid and electrolyte balance).

Research is currently looking into many of these claims; Pubmed has over 1500 articles related to Turmeric. The main compound in Turmeric that is being tested is curcumin. Curcumin supplements are now becoming available, however these may not always be extracted from Turmeric. The curcumin tablets are retailed to reduce inflammation – long term inflammation is linked to many life style diseases.

Turmeric gives food a beautiful, rich yellow colour and it is one of the main spices used in curries. Turmeric has a peppery, warm, and slightly bitter flavour. It is best to consume turmeric with black pepper and fat as they both help with the absorption of the compound curcumin. Turmeric is a versatile spice and can be used to make curries, casseroles, sprinkled on roasted vegetables, used to make a spice rub, and added to rice and soups. Turmeric can also be used to make a tea or broth drink. This wonderful spice can even be added to sweet dishes.

*Irradiation is a process that uses radiation to kill bacteria and extend the shelf life of food. Radiation doses vary for different food stuffs, however the dose limit for spices is usually higher because they are consumed in very small quantities. Irradiated cat food has been banned in Australia since 2009.
